Drugs, Pubs and Clubs

Appropriate for: This course is aimed at club and pub licensees and their staff including door staff, bar staff and welfare staff within licensed premises.

About this course: Public entertainment venues are liable to become arenas for drug taking and supply of drugs. This course looks to achieve a balance between the legal obligations on staff running pubs and clubs and being able to ensure the public can still enjoy a night out. It reflects the latest guidance from the Home Office in their 2002 report "Safer Clubbing."

Duration: one day

Course objectives: By the end of the course, participant will:

  • Be aware of their obligation under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, and under Licensing laws in relation to drug use.
  • Be familiar with key drugs that may be used in pub and club settings
  • Be confident in responding effectively to drug-related situations
  • Be able to maximize safety for club goers in relation to drug use

Course includes:

  • Key drugs, appearance, effects and signs of use
  • Drugs legislation which may affect liquor licensed premises and public entertainment licensed premises under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and the Public Entertainments Licences (Drug Misuse) Act 1997
  • Strategies for identifying and responding to possession, use and supply of drugs on premises
  • Emergency responses
  • Policy Development
  • Role of doorstaff

Format: Taught sections, work in pairs and small groups, group discussion
