Femoral Injecting

Aim of the day: to undertake a detailed exploration of femoral injecting: looking at the available evidence, process, equipment, complications, ethics and strategies to address this issue.

Who the course is for: previously-trained Needle Exchange workers

Objectives: by the end of the day participants will:

  • Be able to list reasons why the femoral vein is widely used and be able to identify strategies to reduce the extent of femoral injecting
  • Understand the structures in the femoral triangle, and how to identify safer points to inject
  • Be able to describe the process for accessing the femoral vein and reducing risks of injury
  • Describe self-care strategies for reducing damage to femoral injecting sites
  • Able to identify key complications of femoral injecting, list symptoms and identify appropriate course of action
  • Able to identify alternatives to femoral injection for existing femoral injectors
  • Understand the ethical and professional issues raised by working with femoral injectors
  • Develop a holistic strategy to address femoral injecting over a six-month period.
