Drugs Awareness - Enhanced Skills (Intermediate Course)

Duration: one or two days

Appropriate for: workers who have undertaken basic drugs awareness, understand key facts about drugs but need to developtheir skills as they will be engaging extensively with on-going users.

About the course: Having completed a basic drugs course, many workers feel that they want to learn more, to consolidate their knowledge and experience and put it on a more practical basis. This course takes drugs awareness training to the next level, building on knowledge gained during basic drugs training, and increasing knowledge, skills and confidence.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course, workers will be able to:

  • illustrate knowledge of key drugs through questions and presentation
  • list and describe key effects of less common drugs
  • summarise key issues in relation to routes of administration
  • discuss and interpret the Hierarchy of Need and Cycle of Change in relation to drugs
  • explain key models of addiction and dependency
  • summarise key facts in relation to neuropharmacology

The course includes:

  • Drugs refresher - Q+A about key drugs
  • Less common drugs - input regarding some more unusual substances
  • Routes of administration - pharmacokinetics
  • drug using careers - transitions and trends
  • Models of addiction - what they mean to workers
  • Cycle of change and hierarchy of need - making them practical
  • Basics of neuropharmacology

Format: The course will involve taught sections, small group work and work in pairs.

Handouts: The course will be accompanied by "Drug Facts" Handouts and additional literature by arrangement.

Notes: This is a flexible course that can be tailored for delivery in a number of settings (e.g. housing, young people specific, community, etc.)
