Drugs and Diversity

About these courses:

These specialist courses explore issues of culture and diversity in relation to drugs. Too often courses have looked at either diversity or drugs and these courses attempt to integrate the subjects so that workers can look at issues of culture and drugs at the same time.

Each of these courses will need to be tailored to local circumstance and need to get in touch to discuss your specific situation in more detail:

WOMAD - World of Medicines and Drugs

About the course: In the shrinking "Global Village" workers are increasingly coming in to contact with people from all over the world. And while we might think drugs are the same the world over, the drugs used, attitudes and responses to drugs are in reality hugely diverse. This course looks at some of the key drugs, trends, attitudes and issues for workers in the big world of international drugs.

Who is the course for: all workers encountering substance misuse and working with diverse client groups - including drugs workers, youth workers, housing support workers, teachers, refugee and asylum seeker support services, health workers

Duration: one day.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course, participants will:
  • Be familiar with key drugs used internationally especially: khat, betel, opium, cannabis
  • Explore cultural and religious attitudes to drugs, medication and recreation
  • Understand how service take up can be influenced by country of origin
  • Explore the issue of UK substance use on young people
  • Be able to implement drugs education strategies for culturally diverse populations
  • Be aware of high-risk activities, especially amongst drug users in EU accession states

Format: Taught sections, whole group discussions, work in pairs and small groups

Drugs, Refugees and Asylum Seekers

About this course: This course is aimed at agencies who house or provide support services to people applying for refugee status or seeking asylum in the UK. The course highlights some of the most important drugs, looks at social and cultural issues and highlights criminal and civil law issues. The course also looks at policy and practice issues.

Who is the course for: providers of housing and support services for people who are seeking asylum, especially those providing housing under the dispersal programme. A basic level of drugs awareness would be useful for participants but the course can be adapted if this is not the case.

Duration: one day

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Have gained an understanding of commonly misused drugs in the UK
  • Have an insight into drugs used in some other countries, especially those most relevant to asylum seekers
  • Understand the reasons why asylum seekers may use drugs
  • Understand the legal aspects of drug use in housing settings
  • Explore interventions and solutions
  • Be more confident in assessing and responding to substance use.

The Course Includes:
Key drugs, their appearance, effects methods of use and risks
Culturally specific issues:

  • Drugs used abroad
  • Different legal systems
  • Reasons for use and supply
  • Functions of substance use
  • Drug use, supply and its cultural role
  • Drugs and the Law
  • Possession, use and supply; implications for clients and workers
  • Civil law: the duty of care
  • Action points: Developing strategies and responding effectively

Drugs and Diversity

About this course: Workers are increasingly aware of the need to create accessible services for a wide population of diverse client groups.

This course links two key strands of work - effective approaches to working with diversity and effective approaches in working with drugs. Typically, diversity work has looked at this subject in isolation - and without specific reference to drugs.

The Drugs and Diversity course overcomes these limitations, creating a diversity course with specific relevance to drugs and alcohol workers.

Who is the course for: all workers encountering substance misuse including drugs workers, health workers, youth workers and social care professionals.

Duration: one day or two day course. The two-day course includes a primary exploration of diversity as detailed in the learning objectives below.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will:
  • Gain understanding of diverse cultures (1 and 2 day)
  • Understand concepts including: race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, faith, culture (2 day)
  • Understand concepts: discrimination, racism, racialism, prejudice, stereotypes (2 day)
  • Understand concepts,: diversity, assimilation, positive discrimination (2 day)
  • Understand key faith groups (2 day)
  • Explore own understanding of prejudice and stereotypes (1 & 2 day)
  • Increase confidence in meeting and engaging with diverse populations (1 &2 day)
  • Understand barriers to accessing services (1 &2 day)
  • Understand principle of assessing local need within diverse populations (1&2 day)
  • Able to devise strategies to engage with diverse populations (1&2 day)
  • Aware of key research and trends in engaging with diverse populations (1& 2 day)
  • Aware of resources for specific diverse populations (1 & 2 day)
  • Aware of specific drug-related issues for key populations (1 & 2 day)
