Alcohol Awareness

Duration: 1 day

Who is the course for: Workers with or without previous drugs training or experience, who need to develop more detailed awareness of alcohol

About the course: The most widely used drug in the UK, alcohol brings with an unparalleled level of related harm. This course provides drugs workers and other professionals with an overview of alcohol use, misuse, harm, dependency and treatment, and allows workers to engage with alcohol use effectively and confidently.

Objectives:
By the end of the course workers will be able to:

  • explain how alcohol works on the body
  • discuss current UK policy on alcohol
  • state key alcohol-related harms and explain how they are caused
  • describe alcohol harm reduction approaches
  • summarise how alcohol unit counting works
  • discuss key models of alcohol dependency
  • describe how alcohol dependency and tolerance may emerge
  • summarise key issues during alcohol withdrawal and how they could be managed
  • apply alcohol screening tools to scenarios
  • construct responses to scenarios
